CO Awareness week

The North Middlesex Fire Department wants everyone to be informed about Carbon Monoxide (CO) Awareness Week. The Department emphasizes the importance of understanding the risks associated with CO and taking preventive measures to protect your household. They encourage residents to have CO alarms installed on each level of their home, especially near sleeping areas, and to check that these alarms are working properly. Here are some key points covered during CO Awareness Week:

  1. What is Carbon Monoxide?
CO is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas, making it nearly impossible to detect without a proper alarm. It's produced by burning fossil fuels such as gas, oil, coal, and wood.
  2. Sources of CO in the Home
Potential sources include gas or oil furnaces, gas water heaters, fireplaces, wood stoves, gas ovens, and car exhaust fumes in attached garages. It’s essential to ensure these appliances are in good working order.
  3. Symptoms of CO Poisoning
Initial symptoms can include headache, dizziness, nausea, and fatigue, which are often mistaken for the flu. Severe poisoning can lead to confusion, loss of consciousness, and even death if not addressed quickly.
  4. Prevention Tips
    • Install CO alarms on each level of your home and test them regularly.
    • Have heating systems, chimneys, and vents inspected annually.
    • Avoid using gas-powered devices indoors without adequate ventilation.
    • Never leave a car running in a closed garage.
  5. Know What to Do in an Emergency
If a CO alarm goes off, everyone should immediately exit the building and call emergency services. Never ignore a CO alarm, as the gas is invisible and undetectable without proper equipment.

By raising awareness, this week encourages individuals to take preventative actions that can save lives. For more information, please visit: https://www.cosafety.ca/ or https://www.oafc.on.ca/public-safety/carbon-monoxide-alarms
